Event Details:
The Event   Soldier Challenge takes to the streets of London on Saturday 19th May 2012 to provide a unique military-styled physical and mental test. Open to all abilities, the event will see teams of 2, 3 or 4 traversing the city, completing a number of different military themed challenges and locating other special checkpoints on route. We will also be testing your fundraising skills as all money raised goes straight to ABF The Soldiers’ Charity; helping soldiers, former soldiers and their families in times of need. Remember, raise £150 or more and get a discounted entry! Read more about this vital charity here. How it works Before you start, you will attend a briefing in which we will tool you up with an A-Z map and location details of some 35 military-themed checkpoints dotted around central London. Armed with the map & info, you and your team will line up at your chosen start wave (wave starts from 10.30) and set off on to the city streets with up to 4hrs to bag as many checkpoints and complete as many activities as you can. It's up to you to decide how you get about - running, public transport or a mix of both. No bikes allowed though - that includes no 'Boris bikes'. Private transport is prohibited including motorcycles and cars. The checkpoints each have a “difficulty rating” (with a points value attached) and tips as to whether it is physical, mental, comedy, involve water etc, to allow you to see what’s in store for you when you get there. We’ll keep time with an electronic chip system and it’s up to you how much you want to pit yourself “against the clock” or simply enjoy the day and visit the checkpoints you like the look of. The 4hrs is a target – some people will return earlier, and others later. And when we tot up the points scored, we’ll see if you’ve beaten the opposition. Confirmation will be provided in the weeks nearer the event weekend What to expect Soldier Challenge brings you a unique opportunity to experience London in a whole new way while raising money for a great cause. The Course: will include exclusive access to many famous central London venues and interacting with them in active and wonderful ways. These venues will be spread far and wide and using an A-Z Map you will navigate your way around. It is up to you how many to visit so you can match this to your teams’ fitness levels. The Activities: The details of the activities will be released to you on the day but expect a real mix of physical, mental and entertaining activities all with a military twist. You could be faced with all sorts of madness from singing to rope swinging, tackling an assault course or tucking in to some rations, cracking a code or a drill sergeant cracking the training whip, it could literally be anything! Some activities may involve getting wet so come prepared if you are going to bag them. An indication of what to expect from the activity locations will be provided before you start so you can pick and chose what you wish to do. Kayaking: There will be some very straightforward kayaking within the event using our fleet of robust, safe and easy to paddle, sit-on-top style boats. We tend to set fairly basic kayak challenges as the standards of paddling generally are fairly (ahem) mixed! Don’t worry if you aren’t the best paddlers but if you can do some kayaking before the event it would help to hone your skills...or just go in a straight line! Bring a spare set of clothes in case you take a dip. Ropes-based Activities: One of the most unique features of this event will be to not only gain exclusive access to many iconic venues but in some cases to clamber over them with ropes! For each ropes activity there will be ropes for the experienced, as well as ropes for the not so experienced, no one misses out! If you think you’re going to give this a go we recommend gaining a little experience by getting along to your local climbing wall or book on to one of our refresher sessions at the event weekend. Who can enter It’s open to all comers – civvies and military alike. Teams must be 2, 3 or 4 people. Naturally, the event will be popular with military teams and we will offer prizes for the top military and civvie teams as well as prizes for overall winners. Pride is therefore at stake as you pit your team against all manner of other challengers.
