Event Details:
General info   The Sandycove Island Challenge swim was first held in 1994. Cork Masters Swimming Club and Cork Lions Club plan to run the swim annually as a joint charity event. It is being promoted as a mass-participation and fun event, but with a serious competitive element for those so inclined. The swim is approx 1,800m around Sandycove island. Safety measures, including boat support, will be implemented as per Swim Ireland recommendations. A detailed briefing on safety resources and procedures will be given on the day. All participants will receive a commemorative swim hat and lapel pin. The last date for receipt of entries is 04 September, 2010. The Organising Committee reserves the right to close entries at an earlier date, if the numbers received exceed 350. For further information, telephone +353 87 412 9838 , email or see www.corkmasters.ie
Explanatory notes   Date of Birth Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd places for both men and women in the following age groups (wetsuit & non-wetsuit): 12 to 17 years, 18 to 24, 25 to 29, 30 to 34, 35 to 39, etc (i.e. in five-year increments as high as necessary to accommodate all entries).

If you will be 17 years of age or younger on 18th September, 2010 please go to www.corkmasters.ie and download the WAIVER form. Complete the form and have it countersigned by a parent/guardian.

Estimated Time Swimmers will start the race in groups of 20 to 30, with the fastest swimmers starting first. Swimmers will be grouped according to the estimated time they submit. If no estimated time is submitted, swimmers will be placed in the last (slowest) groups. There is a maximum allowed time of 1hour. This is required for safety purposes. If you think that you may not be able to complete the course within this time limit, please do not enter.

Swimming Experience - All entrants must prove proficiency in open-water swimming. If you have competed in either the Lee Swim or the Sandycove Island Challenge, or any event in the Leinster Open Sea Committee’s calendar, in the last two years, please list the events. Otherwise, please describe your experience and level of expertise in open-water swimming.

Wetsuits The wearing of wetsuits is permitted. A separate set of prizes will be presented to wetsuited swimmers. See the note under Date of Birth at above.
Other notes   The perpetual Sandycove Island trophy (male and female) will be awarded to the fastest non wetsuit swimmer. This trophy has been made available by Swim Ireland, on condition that it does not leave Ireland. In the event that an overseas swimmer wins one of these trophies, it must be returned to the organisers immediately following the presentation. Wetsuited swimmers will not be eligible to compete for this trophy. Additionally, prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd fastest overall times for both men and women, in both wetsuited and non-wetsuited categories. Handicapping will not be used.
Acknowledgements   The Organising Committee of 'The Edge Sports' Sandycove Island Challenge Swim 2010 wishes to acknowledge the co-operation and support of its sponsors and volunteer organisations: Kinsale Harbour Master, Cork Sub-Aqua Club, Cork Lions Club and Swim Ireland. Cork Lions Club is the official charity of the swim. The Club’s commitment to ensure the event in 2010 and future years is also very much appreciated. The Club is involved in many excellent projects in the Cork area.
